MLD

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a highly effective treatment for many conditions. It is a very gentle, rhythmic technique that encourages the elimination of toxins and stimulates the lymph system. MLD plays a valuable part in treating oedema (the swelling caused by the accumulation of fluid in the tissues).

The Lymph System

The lymph system is a network of nodes and vessels which runs throughout the body. It has two main functions. Firstly, it removes excess fluid, fats, proteins, toxins and waste material from the body’s tissues. Secondly, it defends against bacterial and viral infection. It provides the lymphocytes that fight infection and provide immunity from further infection.

Problems with the lymph system can give rise to or can worsen a number of conditions. Obstruction of the lymph vessels in any area can result in swelling and fluid retention. MLD treats these problems. Examples include:

  • fluid retention
  • skin conditions
  • sinus congestion
  • lymphoedema

MLD is also used to significantly speed the healing of other problems related to lymph flow, for example:

  • leg ulcers
  • fractures
  • soft tissue injuries
  • post-surgical swelling and bruising
